(TibetanReview.net, Jun10, 2016) – Mr Dawa Rinchen, a former Tibetan soldier in a special Indian border security unit and proprietor of a travel agency, is the new Tibetan Welfare Officer of Dharamshala, India. He won election to the post by a huge majority and takes charge on Jun 15.
Born in Sikkim in 1964, Dawa Rinchen served in the Special Frontier Force from 1985 to 1989, including with stints as drill master and arms instructor. He also served in the security staff of HH the Dalai Lama from 1990 to 1993.
Dawa Rinchen has long been associated with the Indo-Tibetan Friendship Society and other civil society groups. He has been running a travel agency called Tibet Tours and Travels since 1996.
