China reports record tourism figures in Tibet

(, Sep14, 2011)  China said Sep 12 it had received record 6.21 million tourists in occupied Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in the first eight months of this year, an increase of 22.1 percent year-on-year. The tourism sector also posted a 42.7 percent jump in revenue between January and August to 6.34 billion yuan, added China’s online Tibet news service Sep 12, citing the regional tourism bureau.

The report said the regional tourism industry witnessed a breakthrough in holiday tourism this year.

For example, it added, a total of 906,400 tourists visited the TAR during the seven-day Shoton Festival alone, bringing a total revenue of 266 million yuan, an increase of 15.01 percent and 8.21 percent respectively year-on-year.
