(TibetanReview.net, Feb25, 2014) – China said Feb 24 that it will never recognize the appointment of Dr Sarah Sewall as the new US coordinator for Tibetan issues. Her appointment to this post came with her appointment as the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights.

“We have never recognized and will not recognize in the future the so-called special coordinator for Tibetan issues appointed by the United States,” its official Xinhua news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying as saying at a daily press briefing. “China resolutely opposes any foreign country using Tibet to interfere in China’s internal affairs,” Reuters further quoted her as saying.

Dr Sewall’s appointment was announced by Secretary of State John Kerry on Feb 21. The appointment is made under the Tibet Policy Act of 2002 and China’s approval, or disapproval, is not an issue given Beijing’s known antipathy towards any discussion of any issue concerned with Tibet. The latest appointment was made after the post was lying vacant for more than a year.
