China tightens Tibet border controls

(TibetanReview.net, Mar 11, 2009) — China said it had tightened control over Tibet’s borders ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan national uprising day of Mar 10. “We have made due deployment and tightened controls at border ports, and key areas and passages along the border in Tibet,” the official Xinhua news agency Mar 9 quoted Fu Hongyu, Political Commissar of the Ministry of Public Security Border Control Department, as saying.

“We will firmly crackdown on criminal activities in Tibet’s border area that pose a threat to China’s sovereignty and government,” it further quoted Fu, a deputy to the annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), as saying.
