(TibetanReview.net, Feb04, 2017) – On his first visit to the United States since President Donald Trump’s assumption of office on Jan 20, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is to hold two events at the University of California San Diego in Jun 2017, said the university in a press statement Feb 2. The Dalai Lama has previously expressed an interest to meet with Mr Trump while the new Secretary of State Mr Rex Tillerson has said he will commit to encourage dialogue on Tibet and to receive the Dalai Lama. However, it is not clear yet whether the Dalai Lama’s upcoming trip will take him to Washington, DC.
The statement said the Dalai Lama will offer the keynote address at an invitation-only UC San Diego All Campus Commencement on Jun17. It added that the day before, on Jun 16, he will speak at an event which will be open to the public. This will be his first 2017 US tour stop, although his other schedules and itineraries have not been announced so far.
“We are honored to host His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at UC San Diego and thankful that he will share messages of global compassion with our graduates and their families, as well as with a broad public audience,” Chancellor Pradeep K Khosla was quoted as saying. “A man of peace, the Dalai Lama promotes global responsibility and service to humanity. These are the ideals we aim to convey and instill in our students and graduates at UC San Diego.”
The Dalai Lama had last visited the university in 2012.
During the upcoming visit the Dalai Lama will also, over Jun 17-18, attend individual college and school ceremonies, namely, those of Earl Warren College, Eleanor Roosevelt College, Rady School of Management, Thurgood Marshall College, School of Global Policy and Strategy, Revelle College and Sixth College.
The university visit will take place in partnership with The Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation, founded by Ven. Lama Tenzin Dhonden, the Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The Friends of the Dalai Lama has been established to facilitate the participation of the Dalai Lama in public and private events. Its efforts are based on Six Core Value Elements that enable each audience to gain a deeper and actionable understanding of the Dalai Lama’s message on Human Values, Secular Ethics, Inter-Religious Harmony, and Global Peace, for the sake of humanity.
