India reports 58 more-contagious Covid cases as daily infections touch new low

(TibetanReview.net, Jan05’21) – The number of people who tested positive with the new, more contagious UK-detected variant of SARS-CoV-2 in India went up to 58 on Jan 5, indianexpress.com Jan 5 cited the country’s ministry of health as saying. The same day India recorded the lowest Covid-19 cases in over 6 months with 16,375 new cases reported.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 16,375 new cases and 201 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Jan 5 at 8AM, taking their cumulative totals to 10,356,844 cases and 149,850 deaths. Both the daily figures were marginally lower that those reported the day before.

A total of 9,975,958, or 96.32%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 231,036, or 2.23% of the total. The case fatality rate continued to be 1.45%. These were mostly improvements over the previous day’s percentage figures.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 16,375, was less than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 29,092, leading to a decline in the number of active cases by 12,917.

Worst-hit Maharashtra reported the highest number of daily new cases at 4,875, followed by Kerala (3,021), Chattisgarh (1,147), Tamil Nadu (838), Uttar Pradesh (711), Gujarat (698), Madhya Pradesh (621), Karnataka (600), West Bengal (597), … Himachal Pradesh (122), and so on.

The 201 new fatalities include 29 from Maharashtra, 25 from West Bengal, 24 from Punjab, 19 from Kerala, 12 each from Delhi and Chattisgarh, 10 each from Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, 8 from Uttarakhand; 7 from Madhya Pradesh, … 2 from Himachal Pradesh and so on.

The active caseload remained below 3 lakh for the 15th consecutive day.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the third highest number of deaths.

The cumulative total of Covid-19 cases among Tibetans in India, Nepal and Bhutan had remained unchanged for the fourth day at 1,448. Of them 1,381 had recovered, 30 were active and 37 had died, according to the tally of the Central Tibetan Administration Jan 4.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 85,774,568 and the deaths 1,855,675, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 4:51 PM on Jan 5, 2021.
