India’s Covid-19 inoculations cross 3.8 lakh, daily new cases lowest in 7 months, Tibetan cases reach 1,487

(TibetanReview.net, Jan19’21) – India said it had carried out a total of 3,81,305 Covid-19 vaccinations by the end of the third day of its ongoing drive which began on Jan 16 morning, with the beneficiaries being from the priority group of healthcare and frontline workers. A total of 580 adverse events following immunization (AEFI) were reported so far. “No case of serious or severe AEFI attributable to vaccination till date,” the indianexpress.com Jan 19 quoted Dr Manohar Agnani, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, as saying.

Two had died, with the cause of the deaths seen to be not related to their vaccination.

A 52-year-old ward boy in a government hospital in Moradabad died a day after he was vaccinated. “The post-mortem by a board of three doctors revealed death due to cardiopulmonary disease. There were pockets of pus in the lungs and an enlarged heart. The death is not related to the vaccination,” Dr Agnani was quoted as saying.

Also, a 43-year-old employee in state health department in Karnataka had died two days after getting the vaccine. “The cause of death is the anterior wall infarction with cardiopulmonary failure,” Dr Agnani has said.

The ministry has said at least seven people had been hospitalised so far following the Covid-19 vaccination.

Meanwhile, the country has reported the lowest single day new cases since second week of June and the lowest single day deaths in nearly eight months, reported the indianexpress.com and ndtv.com respectively Jan 19. 

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 10,064 new cases and 137 new Covid-19 deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Jan 19 at 8AM, taking their cumulative totals to 10,581,837 cases and 152,556 deaths.

A total of 10,2228,753, or 96.66%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 200,528, or 1.90% of the total. The case fatality rate remained at 1.44%. The percentage figures were mostly significant improvements over the previous day’s percentage figures.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 10,064, was less than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 17,411, leading to a decrease in the number of active cases by 7.484.

The country’s fifth worst-hit state with the highest number of active cases of Kerala continued to report the highest daily new infections at 3,346, followed successively by the country’s worst-hit state with second highest number of active cases of Maharashtra (1,924), Nadu (551), Gujarat (495), Chattisgarh (471), second-worst hit Karnataka (435), eighth worst-hit West Bengal (389), fourth worst-hit Tamil seventh-worst hit Uttar Pradesh (376), Madhya Pradesh (304), … Himachal Pradesh (35), and so on.

The 137 daily new deaths included 35 from Maharashtra; 17 from Kerala; and 10 from West Bengal. The rest of the states reported from 9 to no deaths, with Himachal Pradesh reporting 1 new death.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the third highest number of deaths in cumulative numbers.

After remaining unchanged for three days, the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases among Tibetans in India, Nepal and Bhutan has increased by 8 to 1,487. Of them 1,411 had recovered, 39 were active and 37 had died, according to the tally of the Central Tibetan Administration Jan 19.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 95,600,931 and the deaths 2,041,864, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 1:52 PM on Jan 19, 2021.
