(TibetanReview.net, Mar 15, 2009) — Tapey, the 24-year-old monks of Kirti Monastery in Ngaba (Chinese: Aba) County of Sichuan province is being asked to agree to have both his legs amputated, according to Dharamsala-based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) Mar 13. It said that the monk, held at an unknown hospital in Chengdu City, was refusing while the authorities were pressuring him and his mother to relent.

It said the mother was allowed to meet her son for a few minutes at the hospital but not allowed to speak to him.

China had claimed that the monk had suffered burns in his head and neck, so it is not clear why his legs need amputation.
