(TibetanReview.net, Jul26’24) – A reception was held at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, DC, on Jul 25, during which the Sikyong, Mr Penpa Tsering, of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) expressed gratitude to the lawmakers who had sponsored the bill on “Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act” and pushed it through its signing into law on Jul 12 by President Joe Biden, said the CTA on its Tibet.net website Jul 26.
Those who attended the reception were stated to include Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, House Foreign Affair Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, Congressman Jim McGovern, and Congressman Joe Wilson.
Tibetan communities across the free world have been holding “Thank You USA” events to celebrate the signing into law by President Joe Biden of what is referred to, in short, as “Resolve Tibet Act”, in recent weeks. A video of these celebratory events was stated to have been screened at the reception.
Also, speaking at the Capital Area Tibetan Community Center, the Tibetan Sikyong has said the signing into law of the Resolve Tibet Act was a momentous occasion for the Tibetan people because it “challenges every aspect of China’s claim on Tibet”.
The Sikyong has been visiting Washington DC from Dec 22 to 25 for a series of engagements, during which he met with US Congress members, State Department and White House officials on Tibet-related issues, the report said. He has also participated in a closed-door expert roundtable at Brookings Institution, moderated by its China centre director Ryan Hass. Other engagements were stated to include meetings with USAID officials and congressional staffers.
The Sikyong is visiting Tibetan communities in Madison-Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Chicago over the weekend, the report said. He arrived in the USA on Jul 18 will wrap up his visit on Aug 4.
Before USA, the Tibetan Sikyong joined the Ontario Tibetan community in the GangJong Choedhenling in Toronto city to celebrate Resolve Tibet Act, as well as the Dalai Lama’s successful knee surgery and the recent unanimous passage of a motion supporting Tibet’s right to self-determination in the Canadian House of Common, on Jun 10. James Maloney, the President of Canadian Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet, was among those who took part in the event, reported Tibet.net Jul 24.
