(TibetanReview.net, Sep09’26) – Amid reports of increased Chinese military activity reported by local inhabitants, Indian and Chinese armies held two rounds of corps commander-level talks in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kibithoo region to review the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and focus on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the frontier, reported newsonair.gov.in Sep 8, citing India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Addressing the weekly press conference, Jaiswal said the meeting happened pursuant to the understandings reached between the Special Representatives (SRs) of India and China in Aug 2025 and Aug 2026, and subsequent discussions at the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) meetings held in Beijing and New Delhi in May and Aug 2026 respectively, reported theprint.in Sep 8.
“The first Senior Highest Military Commander-Level Flag Meeting was held at Wacha on the Indian side in Arunachal Pradesh on Sep 6 and (the second at) Damai on the Chinese side on Sep 7. A similar mechanism also exists in the Western Sector,” Jaiswal has said, responding to a question.
The report said Jaiswal did not reveal details of what exactly transpired at the meetings.
The talks took place amid continuing tensions in the general area of Taksing in Arunachal Pradesh, with local resident claiming creeping intrusions by China. And they were were held days after India and China held a fresh round of SR talks in Beijing on the long-pending boundary dispute dating back from China’s armed invasion and occupation of Tibet in the middle of the last century.
The Indian delegation was led by Lt General Girish Kalia, commander of the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, but there was no official statement on the meeting, the report said.
At the Aug 25 SR talks, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the boundary question, including the delimitation of the frontier, as well as trans-boundary cooperation.
India was stated to have stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas for the continued development of bilateral ties. Doval had maintained that the improvement in relations between the two countries was directly linked to both sides maintaining peace along the frontier.
However, China is known to have consistently taken the position that the border issues need not hamper further improvement in the normalization of ties between the two countries.
Doval and Wang are the designated SRs for the India-China boundary negotiations, a mechanism established in 2003 to seek a political settlement to the 3,488-km-long Tibet-India border dispute.
The report noted that the latest military-level engagement came as India and China had taken several steps in recent months to stabilise ties, which deteriorated sharply following the mid-2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
India-China ties are gradually moving in a positive direction, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with several leaders on the sidelines of the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, ddindia.co.in Sep 8 cited Jaiswal as saying at the press briefing.
