Daily Covid-19 cases in India hovering about 30,000 mark, active cases continue to fall

(TibetanReview.net, Dec11’20) – The fact that active Covid-19 cases in India had dropped to 3.63 lakh on Dec 11, the lowest after 146 days and constituting just 3.71% of the country’s total positive cases, has been a landmark achievement, noted timesnownews.com Dec 11. However, daily new cases in recent days have been going up and down the 30,000 mark even as active cases continued to fall, albeit marginally.

The country again reported just over 30,000 daily new cases Dec 12 morning, compared to a figure that was marginally less than that the day before.

And the country saw the lowest reduction in active cases in the past 13 days, noted the timesofindia.com Dec 12.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 30,006 new cases and 442 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Dec 12 at 8AM, taking their cumulative totals to 9,826,775 cases and 142,628 deaths.

A total of 9,324,328, or 94.88%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 359,819, or 3.66% of the total. The case fatality rate was 1.45%. These percentage figures were mostly improvements over the previous day’s figures.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 30,006, was less than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 33,494, leading to a decline in the number of active cases by 3,930.

Maharashtra, with 3,824 fresh cases, remained on top of the worst-hit list of Indian states, followed by Karnataka (1,238 fresh cases), Andhra Pradesh (538), Tamil Nadu (1,220), and Kerala (4,470).

The day’s 442 new fatalities included 87 from Maharashtra, 60 from Delhi, 50 from West Bengal, 29 each from Kerala and Punjab, 23 from Haryana, 16 from Karnataka and 14 each from Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

 India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the third highest number of deaths. It is also the country still reporting the highest daily number of new cases after the USA.

The total number of Covid-19 cases among Tibetans in India, Nepal and Bhutan had remained unchanged for the fourth day at 1,353 (↑0), of whom 161 were active, 1,158 had recovered and 34 (↑0) had died, according to the latest tally of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) as of Dec 12.

The up to 15 cases reportedly detected over the past couple of days or so in Mcleod Ganj, Dharamshala, did not appear to have been included.

In addition, reports suggest that 8 more people in the Nechung Monastery area, located adjacent to the CTA compound, had tested positive in the latest development on Dec 11.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 71,148,364 and the deaths 1,596,108, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 1:57 PM on Dec 12, 2020.
