India’s daily Covid-19 cases lowest since Jun 2, deaths lowest since May 11

(TibetanReview.net, Feb02’21) – India reported this morning its lowest daily count of Covid-19 since Jun 2, noted the ndtv.com Feb 2. It also reported the lowest Covid-19 deaths since May 11, noted the indianexpress.com Feb 2. And the fall in daily deaths has been below 100 for the first time since May 14 last year, noted the timesofindia.com Feb 2.

Since October, India has been witnessing a drop in the cases recorded each day. Scientists and health experts say while the worst may be behind us, we are still quite a distance from the end, said the indianexpress.com report.

The government told Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament, that the country has been showing a declining trend of Covid-19 cases since the last four months, said a PTI report Feb 2.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 8,635 new Covid-19 cases and 94 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Feb 2 at 8 AM, taking their cumulative totals to 10,766,245 cases and 154,486 deaths respectively. Both the daily numbers were significantly lower than those reported the day before.

A total of 10,448,406, or 97.05%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 163,353, or 1.52% of the total. The case fatality rate was 1.43%. The percentage figures were all improvement over those reported the day before.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 8,635, was less than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 13,423, leading to a decrease in the number of active cases by 4,882.

Five states that saw the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours were: Kerala (3,459), Maharashtra (1,948), Tamil Nadu (502), Chhattisgarh (322) and Gujarat (298). 

The 94 daily new deaths included 27 from Maharashtra; 17 from Kerala; 7 from Tamil Nadu, 6 from West Bengal and 5 from Chattisgarh. The rest of the states have reported from 4 to no death.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the fourth highest number of deaths in cumulative numbers.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 103,486,647 and the deaths 2,240,276, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 4:53 PM on Feb 2, 2021.
