India’s daily Covid-19 cases soaring in second wave

(TibetanReview.net, Mar21’21) – The latest daily Covid-19 cases reported this morning at over 43,800 was the highest single-day count in the country in 115 days, reported the timesofindia.com Mar 21. And the day’s death toll at nearly 200 was the most since Jan 13.

The report also said active cases of the virus in India had crossed 3 lakh, just eight days after going past the 2-lakh mark.

India’s capital Delhi has reported over 800 daily cases for the first time this year this morning as the positivity rate breached the 1% after over two months, reported the PTI news agency Mar 20, citing the state’s health department.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 43,846 new Covid-19 cases and 197 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Mar 21 at 8 AM, taking their cumulative totals to 11,599,130 cases and 159,755 deaths respectively.

A total of 11,130,288, or 95.96%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 309,087, or 2.66% of the total. However, the case remained at 1.38%.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 43,846, was substantially higher than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 22,956, leading to a big jump in the number of active cases by 20,693.

Eight states have reported more than 1,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (27,126), Punjab (2,578), Kerala (2,078), Karnataka (1,798), Gujarat (1,565), Madhya Pradesh (1,308), Chattisgarh (1,273), and Tamil Nadu (1,243).

Thirteen more states/Union Territories have reported more than 100 new cases in the last 24 hours, namely Haryana (821), Delhi (813), Rajasthan (445), Uttar Pradesh (441), Telangana (394), West Bengl (383), Andhra Pradesh (380), Chandigarh (203), Goa (154), Himachal Pradesh (148), Jammu and Kashmir (140), Jharkhand (123), and Odisha (120). 

Nine states have reported 3 or more Covid-19 deaths each in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (92), Punjab (38), Kerala (15), Tamil Nadu (8), Chattisgarh (11), Karnataka (7), Gujarat (6), Haryana (3), and Telangana (3). The rest of the states have reported 2 or less deaths.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the fourth highest number of deaths in cumulative numbers.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 122,878,638 and the deaths 2,711,083, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 2:56 PM on Mar 21, 2021.
