India’s latest daily new Covid-19 cases highest in 53 days

(TibetanReview.net, Mar04’21) – Covid-19 cases in India are rising each day, with the country registering the highest single-day figure this morning in 53 days, reported the timesofindia.com Mar 4.

Six states currently contribute nearly 86% of the new cases, the hindustantimes.com Mar 4 cited government data as showing. It said Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka continued to report a surge in the daily new cases.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 17,407 new Covid-19 cases and 89 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Mar 04 at 8 AM, taking their cumulative totals to 11,156,923 cases and 157,435 deaths respectively.

A total of 10,826,075 or 97.03%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 173,413, or 1.55% of the total. The case fatality was at 1.41%.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 17,407, was more than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 14,031 leading to a increase in the number of active cases by 3,287.

Fifteen states – same as yesterday – have reported more than 100 new cases in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (9,855), Kerala (2,765), Punjab (772), Tamil Nadu (489), Gujarat (475), Karnataka (528), Madhya Pradesh (417), Delhi (240), Chattisgarh (267), Haryana (240), West Bengal (225), Telangana (152), Andhra Pradesh (135), and Rajasthan (215), and Jammu & Kashmire (104). 

Six states have reported 3 or more Covid-19 deaths each in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (42), Kerala (15), Punjab (12), Chattisgarh (4), Delhi (3), and Karnataka (3). The rest of the states have reported 2 or less deaths.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the fourth highest number of deaths in cumulative numbers.

The cumulative total of Covid-19 cases among Tibetans in India, Nepal and Bhutan has remained unchanged at 1,576. Of them 1,480 had recovered, 55 were active and 41 had died, according to the tally of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) as of Mar 4.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 115,199,608 and the deaths 2,560,287, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 12:57 PM on Mar 04, 2021.
