(TibetanReview.net, Mar14’21) – Now firmly in its second wave, Covid-19 cases in India have been continuing to rise each day. States like Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are showing a steep rise in the daily new cases and have accounted for 87.73% of the new instances of the disease reported in a day, reported the PTI news agency Mar 14, citing India’s health ministry.

The ministry has said the day before, that eight states, namely Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Haryana, had been seeing an upward trajectory over the past three weeks.

The total reported this morning was the highest daily rise in 84 days, the ministry has said.

The latest data from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that there were 25,320 new Covid-19 cases and 161 new deaths in the country in the past 24 hours as of Mar 14 at 8 AM, taking their cumulative totals to 11,359,048 cases and 158,607 deaths respectively.

A total of 10,989,897, or 96.75%, had recovered while the number of active cases was 210,544, or 1.85% of the total. The case fatality was at 1.4%.

The latest daily number of new cases, at 25,320, was significantly more than the daily number of those who had recovered, at 16,637, leading to a significant jump in the number of active cases by 8,522.

Sixteen states have reported more than 100 new cases in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (15,602), Kerala (2,035), Punjab (1,510), Karnataka (921), Gujarat (775), Tamil Nadu (695), Madhya Pradesh (675), Chattisgarh (543), Haryana (424), Delhi (419), West Bengal (276), Telangana (228), Rajasthan (201), Andhra Pradesh (175), Uttar Pradesh (154), and Chandigarh (144).

Eight states have reported 3 or more Covid-19 deaths each in the last 24 hours, namely Maharashtra (88), Punjab (22), Kerala (12), Chattisgarh (6), Tamil Nadu (4), Haryana (4), Delhi (3), and Jammu and Kashmir (3). The rest of the states have reported 2 or less deaths.

India is currently the country with the world’s second highest number of Covid-19 cases and the fourth highest number of deaths in cumulative numbers.

Across the world the number of Covid-19 cases totaled 119,553,696 and the deaths 2,649,033, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University as of 2:55 PM on Mar 14, 2021.
