(TibetanReview.net, Sep20, 2018) – All but two of the 697 townships in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) have now been made accessible by road and by 2020 even all its 5,467 villages will be similarly opened up, reported China’s official chinadaily.com.cn Sep 19, citing the region’s department of transportation.
The report said that currently all but 30 of the region’s 5,467 villages could be reached by road – an access rate of 99 percent – with more than 79 billion yuan ($11billion) being spent on road construction in rural areas during China’s 13th Five-Year Plan period of 2016-20.
The report said that since 2013, the TAR had adopted advanced large-scale designs and construction companies to accelerate the region’s road construction.
The current plan was stated to be that by 2020 all eligible townships and administrative villages will be accessible by proper roads while all eligible townships and 80 percent of administrative villages will be accessible by shuttle buses.
