(TibetanReview.net, Jan07, 2018) – India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) was reported to have issued a string of alerts warning that Tibetan refugees settled in northeast of the country were being approached by China to provide strategic information about the area. However, there are no names and detainees, and neither any indication of the kind of information being sought or collected. China is stated to take advantage of the refugees’ lack of opportunities for its recruitment drive.
China has reportedly managed to convince a number of young Tibetan refugees to work as its spies in exchange for money, it is aiming to recruit many more, reported theprint.in Jan 5, citing IB sources without naming anyone.
The report said the IB was soon going to submit a detailed report to the government, explaining how China had been eyeing what it called disgruntled Tibetan refugees in the region for the past two years. It cited unnamed sources as saying many of the refugees China had recruited had already left for China, without giving any name and description of such alleged subversives.
“It appears to be China’s strategy to make a base in India to create a channel, through which it can constantly receive relevant strategic information,” the report quoted the unnamed source as saying.
The report said a scrutiny of Tibetan refugees in the area may start after a report, currently said to be under preparation, will be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The report quoted “the source” as saying, “The present generation of Tibetan refugees is very volatile and vulnerable. While they wish to have a good lifestyle, they do not have any job opportunities. This is what the Chinese took advantage of to plant their spies.”
Asked about the development, an unnamed Home ministry official was quoted as saying, “It may be a possibility. We will look into it.”
